Oct 18-20 Macinac Island

We drove down Michigan to the Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island area. You have to take a ferry to the island, and once you're there, you will not see any motorized vehicles. It's where the horse is king, and when you call a taxi, you'll get a horse-drawn carriage. The island is loaded with fantastic Victorian mansions, many of which have been turned into bed and breakfasts or inns. The famous Grand Hotel we saw only from a distance because we didn't think we wanted to pay $10 apiece to go inside. Besides that, from the sign outside the entrance, we didn't feel we were dressed well enough to go in. Ladies were not supposed to wear pants, and men needed to have a sport coat after 6 pm. Not our kind of place, obviously.

Had camera troubles again on this tour. When I tried to take a picture of the 5-mile long Mackinac Bridge from the ferry on the way to the island, we found that the battery in the camera was dead. We figured we could buy a new one on the island, but when we got there, we found that most of the shops (of which there were many) were closing down for the winter, and both the camera shops already had shut their doors. About all you could still buy on the island was beer, fudge, and t-shirts. So, once again, we were stuck with using my cell phone camera, so the pics you'll see here are pretty dark.

The little bark hut was the first "chapel" built for the Indians on the island. You'll also see pictures of the British fort built after the French and Indian war in 1780. So sorry about the quality of the pictures. If you'd really like to see what the island looked like, I'd suggest going to their website: http://www.mackinacisland.org/history.html. It really is an awesome place to visit!
